Welcome to the Sagittarius Archers Archive Page.

All past reports are listed in numerical order.

Report 1-21

April is now passed and Sagittarius Archers were involved in several events as both organizers and competitors. Our Blacktail Buckle shoot in early April saw some impressive scores shoot by our club's archers. Dale Reilly shoot a 392 in the Male Open Compound Class only to be out done by Will Dueck with a 394. Deb McCartney shoot a 347 to win the Female Compound Class. Wayne Myers won the new Extreme Class with a 376. We were a little disappointed with the weather this year as it rained on and off Saturday, and drizzled occasionally on Sunday. This unsettled weather dropped our attendance a bit. Al Campsal and his family came down from Williams Lake and another gentleman from 100 Mile House joined us in spite of the weather.

Sagittarius Archers also competed in local events in Burnaby and Ridgedale. Will Dueck drove all the way to Smithers to shoot in the Smithers Bowhunters Jamboree April 27 & 28. He finished second to former Sagittarius member Roger V. (I'm not going to try to spell his last name.) Jason Stebanuk and Adrein Scheer drove down to a shoot near Missoula, Montana for the second leg of the I.B.O. Triple Crown. Jason shoot better at this event than the first leg, and Adrein had tough time with his form and finished sixth. The final leg is in Oregon and will be shoot in May.

The fire pit with benches and tables for the Chad Davis Memorial is nearing completion. The concrete has been poured and the forms stripped. Benches and tables have arrived but require assembly and the fire pit needs to be lined with fire brick. We hope to have everything finished for the Chad Davis Memorial 3-D. We have also installed a new concrete shooting pad on the range to the east of the firearms range. The butts are now at the marked yardage's from that new pad.

Report 1-22

Well the 2001 3-d season has pretty well wound up. Ridgedale hosted their 3-D Massacre on aug. 10th, 11th, and 12th. with several Sagittarius members present. I don't have any results other than Will Dueck walked away with three draw prizes, the 50-50 draw and a Chek-Mate bow from the raffle. It is good to have someone take heat for a change.

Adrein Scheer returned home after shooting the Canadian 3-D championships in Winnipeg and then the World IBO Championship at Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia. Adrein was disappointed with his 5th place at the Canadian on a course he described as far easier than his score indicated. He shot the Male Professional Fingers class at the Worlds and finished 11th. Adrein was 4th after the second day. The last day, 2 strands on his harness separated and dropped him out of contention.

The date for our B.C.'s Largest Indoor 2002 has been set at January 12th and 13th. Work is already under way on lay out, additional sponsorship and other ideas as to what we maybe able to add. It will be held, as usual at the Abbotsford Argo-Plex. If anyone has access to bamboo that we can cut and use in our scenery setups please contactus.

Report 1-23

Well the 3-D season has pretty much wound down for most of the Sagittarius Archers. The last major tournament for most club members was the B.C. Provincial Championship held in Quesnel June 29th and 30th. Our club was well represented at the provincials again this year. Debbie McCartney took first place in the FBO category with Loni Storey taking second. Curtis Chaplin won the MBR class and his son Adam took the 8 and under open class. Dean Mancini also had a fairly successful tournament finishing third in the MBO category. Club members who also took part in this event were; Steven Chaplin, Will Dueck, Darryl Hamilton, Steve McCartney, and Myles McCarthy. (If I have missed anything please contact me.)

At the time of this writing the Canadian National 3-D Championship in Nova Scotia had just completed but I have yet to find out how Curtis Chaplin and Myles McCarthy made out. Adrien Scheer is leaving to compete at the IBO World Championship in Virginia next week and we wish him well.

Plans for our B.C.'s Largest 3-D Indoor are already starting. It will go January 11th and 12th 2003. As is always the case sponsorship for this event helps make it success it is. If anyone would care to help sponsor one of the premier archery events in this province please contact us.

Report 1-25

The Sagittarius Archers hosted our annual food bank shoot December 16. We received a lot of support for this event from the archery community. The abbotsford food bank staff estimated we collected about $800.00 in food plus a further $50.00 in cash was also donated.

One of the notable people in attendance was former world champion archer Dorothy Lidstone. She appeared quite happy as she walk out with turkey she had won. My 7 year old son, the introvert, asked if he could go to her place for dinner. All in all it was an enjoyable day and we hope we can generate the same support in 2002 for this worthy cause.

Report 1-26

The annual Sagittarius Christmas shoot has just completed and it was very successful.  We would like to thank all the members of the archery community who came out and supported the Abbotsford Food Bank.  This year  $425.00 was raised plus a large box of food.

I would like to clear up some unfinished reports from earlier.  Curtis Chaplin finished 16th in the Male BowHunter Release class at the Canadian 3-d Championships held in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Miles McCarthy finished 2nd in the Hunter Class.  You can find a picture of Miles' smiling face on the Federation of Canadian Archers website. (www.fca.ca)  Adrien Scheer finished 13th in the Professional Male Fingers category and Linnea Kirby finished 12th in the Female Bowhunter Release class at the International Bowhunting Organization World Championship held at Snowshoe Mountain, Virginia. Congratulations also go to Adrien Scheer for setting new Canadian records in the Senior Compound Limited class in a 900 round. He set new records at 55m, 45m, and 35m, and total score for a 900 round in that class on September 15, 2002

B.C.'s Largest Indoor, which is to held on Jan. 11th and 12th, 2003, is really coming together.  There will be new bows on display by, Browning, Champion, Hoyt, Martin, The North American Archery Group, and PSE. Manufacture reps. with be on hand for several of these bows.  Cannor nurseries is again loaning us plants for scenery.  Mckenzie has donated a target this year and the Champion Bow Company, Chek-Mate Archery, PSE and Rodney Wright Longbows have each committed to donate a bow.  Browning has come to the table with a very strong donation and  Monsen's Sporting Goods is supporting us again as are several others whom I'll post when I get a complete list.  We would like to thank those at Big Game Archery, Boorman Archery, and Hub Sports who have helped us enormously in obtaining the sponsorship for the upcoming B.C.'s Largest Indoor.

Report 1-27

The Abbotsford Fish and Game club has just completed our banquet. Big Game Awards are also handed out for club members at this banquet, which seems an appropriate time to mention how the Sagittarius club members faired in their hunting pursuits this past year.

We hand out plaques to our archers when they harvest their first animal with a bow. Bruce Stebanuk achieved his plaque by taking a black bear which scored an impressive 16 13/16 inches. His son, Tyler, got a whitetail doe as did Dave Marsh to earn their plaques. Jason Stebanuk shoot a russian boar while in Saskatchewan.

Other club members who had success with a bow were; Will Dueck with a bobcat and a 2x3 blacktail. Darrell Hamilton with a 2x2 blacktail. Wayne Myers had a good season harvesting a 4x4 blacktail scoring 100 6/8, a 16 8/16 black bear and a whitetail doe. Danny Meyers was successful in taking a whitetail doe. Wayne Meyers got the Bow Hunter Of the Year Award this year with 3 animals as well as the Fraser Valley Big Buck Award which is open to all Abbotsford Fish and Game members and the Big Game Award. Bruce Stebanuk received the Merle McCallum Bear Trophy for largest bear taken by an Sagittarius Club member with bow.

Many archers from our club had enjoyable, comical and at times down right frustrating trips this past year. Names will be with held to protect me. One club member learned coming to full draw can cause your balaclava to catch on your bow string and blindfold you. The ensuing no hands battle for sight was lost, as was the 3x3 whitetail, when he punched the trigger of his release and arrowed an embankment. Another archer used the wrong pin and shoot low on what is believed to be a 150+ class whitetail. Personally I find any time spent in the woods enjoyable. This includes the trip with some of our club members and the short day trips I took with my 7 year old son. Archery is a great way to introduce younger people to hunting and hopefully he will be dragging me along when I get older.

Report 1-28

We have just completed our 12th annual Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation 3-d shoot. All shooting fees are donated to the R.M.E.F. The monies raised stay in Canada. This year the Sagittarius archers wrote a cheque to the R.M.E.F. for $2100.00. The following is a thank you letter from Cliff Heppner who is the B.C. Regional Director of R.M.E.F.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for another successful fundraiser and to tell you how much I enjoyed meeting you and spending the day in Abbotsford. I got some names for another RMEF 8G8 committee volunteers. I very much appreciated having a table and the great food that you served. I look forward to working with you in the future. This kind of team effort is what makes the work of the RMEF a success. Thank you again."

The Sagittarius Archers would like to thank all the archers who came out and supported this event. We had approximately 220 archers out on a beautiful sunny Sunday. To keep this article on a positive topic we won't discuss the wind as it was well discussed on on shoot day. We had some wonderful draw prizes from the R.M.E.F. again this year. The most sot after prizes where the Excalibur crossbow which Roma Davidson won and young Mike Duffil went home with a beautiful R.M.E.F. presentation knife. We hope all will attend next year for this very worth while cause.

Report 1-29

Our 8th annual B.C.'s Largest Indoor 3-D was held January 12th and 13th at the Agri-Fair arena in Abbotsford.  This, in my opinion, was probably the best shoot we have had to date.  We had archers from Vancouver Island, Quesnel, The East Kootenays, and Washington state.  Sagittarius members all received positive responses from various archers on the shoot which is very encouraging.  More information can be found by following the link above to the indoor page.

Report 1-30

The 9th annual B.C.'s Largest Indoor has just wound up and from all reports it was the best indoor that we have hosted.  Sagittarius members did very well.  In female compound release Loni Mancini took 1st on Saturday and 3rd on Sunday. Anneli Stebanuk got 2nd on Saturday and Debbie McCartney took 3rd on Saturday and 1st on Sunday with a great round of 148.  Male compound fingers was dominated by Sagittarius archers with Adrien Scheer shooting a perfect 150 Saturday followed by in 2nd Darren Mulrooney and in 3rd Jim Thorpe.  Sunday had Adrien on top spot again with a 3 way shoot off for 2nd, 3rd and 4th with Jim, Darren and Ian Baird.  Jim beat out Darren with Ian just out of the ribbons.  Curtis Chaplin owned the male fixed pin release class shooting with perfect rounds of 150 both days.  Saturday he won a shoot off against Washington State archer Thomas Knof  but he was all alone on Sunday.  Al Evans was in a 5 way tie for 3rd but had left before the Saturday shoot off.  Sunday Curtis Irving won a 3 way shoot off to take 2nd.  Will Dueck had a great weekend by cleaning the course both days.  He won the Saturday shoot off with a hit on the center mark but Sunday's shoot off left in out of the ribbons.  Wayne Meyers and Jason Stebanuk both shot clean on Saturday but failed to place in the shoot off.  Dan Meyers shoot clean on Sunday and got 3rd in that shoot off.  Steve McCartney had a good weekend. He managed to shoot!  His upper right arm has yet to heal so, with some help, a bow was modified to shoot with a mouth tab.  More info about Steve and the B.C.'s Largest Indoor can be found on the B.C.'s Largest Indoor web page.

Report 1-31

The months of February and March have had the Sagittarius Archers quite busy. We hosted our 11th annual Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Shoot on Feb. 24th. The weather made this event quite interesting. More information about this shoot can be found on the link below.

Club members have attended a number of shoots over the past two months and many have done quite well notably Will Dueck and Dean Mancini. Will shot a perfect round of 400 in the male open class at the Feb. 3rd Mission 3-d. This is believed to be the first perfect 400 shot in the Fraser Valley. ( If this is not the case please correct me) On Mar. 3rd Dean Mancini also shot a 400 at Mission. This should make for some tight competition the rest of the year.

Adrein Scheer went to Spokane on the weekend of March 23rd and 24th to defend the I.B.O. triple crown title for Washington, Montana, and Oregon which he won last year. Jason Stebanuk also went to shoot the Male Open Class.

Most of the preparations for our annual Blacktail Buckle Shoot have been complete. The shoot goes April 13th and 14th. We don't know if the new fire pit on the west of the club house will be ready for the shoot. The forms are in place and are awaiting concrete. If the weather cooperates as it usually does for this event we should have a great weekend.

Report 1-32

Well here we are in early March and another hunting season is just around the corner. (At least we thought it was until this past weekend) It is time we reviewed some of the highlights Sagittarius Archers had in 2002 which have not been reported.

Archers who "Robin Hooded" their arrows in 2002 were; Darrell Hamilton, Steve McCartney, Miles McMarthy, Dean Mancini and Loni Mancini. It is a great feeling when you get your first "Robin Hood". This is followed by the thought that you don't want to do it to often as it gets expensive.

Four archers were successful in the spring of 2002 with black bear. Bruce Stebanuk and Wayne Meyers each harvested 2 bears while Will Dueck and Darrell Hamilton managed to fill 1 tag each. One of Wayne's bears measured 6 feet and scored 18 9/16 which earned him the Merle McMallum trophy for the largest black bear taken with a bow.

Sagittarius Archers had limited success this past fall. The snow came later than normal and temperatures stayed higher which slowed deer movement in the late archery season. Al Fadden took the only mule deer with a bow which was a 2 point. Will Dueck won the Fraser Valley Big Buck Award this year with a 2x2 blacktail. It was the only blacktail taken by a Sagittarius Archer. Ian Schroeder brought home a 5 point Alberta whitetail with Wayne Meyers taking a 3 point buck early in the season and a doe late in the season. Darren Mulrooney harvested his first whitetail late in the season bringing home a doe.

Wayne Meyers needed his pickup to take home the hardware he won at the awards banquet. He won the Big Game Award and the Bow Hunter of the Year in addition to the Merle McMallum trophy. Ian Biard noted that this was the 5th year in a row he had won the Bow Hunter of the Year. Wayne's wife Wendy voice her support with a chant of "Go Will Go".

I would like to mention some of the other "highlights" of Sagittarius trips but after last year's report, people are a little less forthcoming with any good stories. We are all hoping for a successful hunting season in 2003. I think it is important to mention that success doesn't have to mean bringing home meat. Success can mean just getting to go into the woods to hunt or introducing someone new to the sport of bowhunting. This came to mind after talking to Steve McCartney at the Sportmens Show. When I last mention him, his arm was not healing. He was determined to hunt bear this spring using his mouth tab. I am happy to report that on March 8th he drew his bow back with his arm.

Report 1-33

The Sagittarius Archers will be hosting our annual food bank 3-d shoot at the Abbotsford Fish & Game club on Sunday, December 16.(Indoor) The first arrow goes at 10am continuing until 4pm. Shooting fees are by donation of food or cash to the Abbotsford Food Bank. Given the current state of affairs more people are in need than in previous years so please come out and support this cause. There will be random draws for turkeys as usual.

report 1-128

The Sagittarius Archers have been busy this past month as there are a
lot of shoots in the early spring. Loni Mancini, Will Dueck and Adrein
Scheer drove down to Spokane, Washington the weekend of March 30th for
the first leg of the I.B.O. (International Bowhunters Organization)
Northwest Triple Crown. They made a very respectable showing. Loni
took 4th in the Female Bowhunter Open class and Will finished 6th in the
Male Bowhunter Open category. Adrein won the Pro Male Fingers Class.
All three plan on attending the second leg which will be held in Lolo,
Montana the weekend of April, 27th.

Several Sagittarius members attended the Merrit 3-D the first weekend
in April. All report it was a well run shoot with close to 200 archers
from all over the province attending. A good time was had by all who
attended and apparently some of the shooting wasn't bad either.

April 12th and 13th saw us host our 15th annual BlackTail Buckle
Shoot. The weather was decent Saturday morning but it started to
deteriorate in the afternoon. Sunday bore no resemblance to the forecast
with heavy rain most of the morning. The compound finger shooters
agreed to shoot 20 targets and quit. Rain on the finger tabs caused them
to hang up on the bow strings, making for some erratic shooting. Other
classes soldiered on, with the last class of shooters walking through
the club house doors at 4:00pm. Highlights of the shoot included Dan
Meyers beating his dad Wayne by 2 points to win the Male Compound Open
Class. Adrein Sheer shot the high score of the weekend with a 388 out
of 400 hundred on the Saturday. The Saturday evening the Sagittarius
Archers had a hot dog roast and birthday cake for 2 of our female club
members. ( Names and ages withheld for personal safety concerns.)
Inspite of the weather we had a decent turn out, with archers coming
from as far as Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House. Don Harper
came down from Creston again We would like to thank all who attended
and we hope to see more of our American friends back again next year.

Report 1-134

Dec.14th 2003
The Sagittarius Archers would like to thank those members of the
archery community who came out and supported our annual food bank shoot.
It was very encouraging to see the number of people who said keep the
change when buying rounds.  A thank you goes out to Tony Hicks, who
brought in his portable stereo and Christmas music for us, as he did
last year.  We finished the day with 4 large boxes of food and $439.00
in cash.  The Abbotsford Food Bank greatly appreciates the cash, as it
takes them through times when donations are do not meet demand, and them
can purchase food at much better prices than we can.  All in all it was
a very successful day.

Earlier this month the Dale Reilly  dropped off $140.00 worth of toys,
from the Sagittarius Archers, for toy drive at Cannor Nurseries in
Abbotsford.  Cannor Nurseries have been tremendous supporters of our
B.C. Largest' Indoor 3-D. We thought it right to show some support for
them and a very worthwhile charity that they support.

The 10th Annual B.C.'s Largest Indoor 3-D goes in less than 4 weeks so
make your plans now for Jan.10th and 11th, 2004 We love to putting this
shoot on and we have some great sponsorship again this year.  A list of
sponsors and information on this event is in the previous report on this
page, or check the posters at your local archery shop. See you there in
2004.

Report 1-142

Well here we are the 2nd of September.  Early bow season is open and
the southern half of the province has the forests closed due to the
extreme fire hazard.  It's time to review the summer activities of
Sagittarius Archers.   Sagittarius Archers where on the podium at the
BCAA 3-D championships in Quesnel at the end of June.  Miles McCarthy
took second in the Hunter Fingers class while Sandy Dueck finished
second in Female Bowhunter Open.  Loni Mancini won the Female Bowhunter
Open.

Will Dueck packed up his family and Darrell Hamilton and went to the
Queen Charlotte Islands for a successful deer hunt. When Will returned,
he found Sandy had packed up with Loni Mancini and gone to the 3-D
Nationals in Estevan, Saskatchewan.  The ladies represented themselves
quite well, with Loni finishing second and Sandy finishing fifth in the
Female Bowhunter Open Class.  Al Sarich and his son Adam also competed
at the nationals. Al finished in the middle of the pack in the Male
Bowhunter Open while Adam was twelfth in Youth Male Release.

The International Bowhunters Organization World Championships were
held at Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia, August 14-17.  Loni Mancini
and Adrein Scheer flew down a few days early to adjust to the time
change and shoot some of the local ranges as a tune-up for the
championships.  Adrein finished tenth in the Professional Male Fingers
class on Friday and did not make the Sunday final.  Loni Mancini had an
awesome round on Friday and finishing tied for fifth in the qualifying
round. Loni unfortunately ran out of gas on Sunday and finished tenth in
the final of the Female Bowhunter Open class. This is very impressive as
it was her first time to the worlds. We are all proud of her
accomplishments this year.

Now it's time time to go do a rain dance and continue with preparations
for the Tenth Annual B.C.'s Largest Indoor 3-D.

Report 1-179

The Sagittarius Archers have finished hosting our 10th Annual B.C.'s
Largest Indoor 3-D. The 2004 edition of this event ran almost
flawlessly thanks to some dedicated work by club members.

A reminder that the Sagittarius, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF)
3-D goes February 22nd. Cliff Hepner of the RMEF was at the Indoor and
he will be on hand again for this event. Please come out and shoot, as
all shoot fees collected go to the RMEF and they stay in Canada. It is a
great way to have some found, support a good cause and possibly win a
great door prize.

Report 1-181

The Sagittarius Archers held our Annual Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) Shoot on February 22nd. We had an absolutley beautiful day weather wise with the sun out and the temperature well above normal for this time of year. Gordon Hooge from the Chilliwack chapter of the RMEF was on hand to answer questions and promote the work they do.  All shooting fees from this event were donated to the RMEF, which totaled $1500 this year.  There several wonderful RMEF door prizes again at this years event.  The Boumas from Lynden, Washington cleaned up by winning a True Northsmoker and a beautiful limited edition framed elk print. We hope they didn't have any trouble clearing customs.

Ted Kennedy of the B.C. Archery Association (BCAA) spoke to the archers about changes that are being implimented regarding sponsorship to the 3-D Nationals. His presentation was rather well received.  I believe more information on the subject can be found on the BCAA web site or at least contact information for Ted will be there.

Our parent club, the Abbotsford Fish and Game club, also held their annual awards banquet on February 8th. The Sagittarius Archers also presented our awards at this event. Ian Baird, who is the club offical scorer noted that 60% of animals harvested this year by Abbotsford Fish and Game members were with bow and arrow.

This year the Fraser Valley Big Buck Award went to Rob Zseder with an impressive Blacktail that scored 132 1/8". The Merle McCallum Bear Trophy went to Will Dueck with a 19" black bear. Ten year old Adam Chaplin took his first big game animal in style. He harvested a mule deer with his bow that scored 143".  The BowHunter of the Year Award was not won by Wayne Meyers this year.  Hunting partners Will Dueck and Darrel Hamilton shared the award for 2003.

Report 1-199

The BC Archery Association held its annual Provincial Championships in Vanderhoof June 19th and 20th in Vanderhoof.
The black flies and mosquitos made their presents known to all and the 30 degree C heat made this an extreme tournament.
Sagittarius Archers placed quite well here with our club President, Wayne Meyers taking 5th in the Male Compound Masters
class. His wife Wendy took 2nd in the female compound master class. Loni Mancini and Sandy Dueck finished 1st and 2nd
in Female Bowhunter Open catagory and Adrein Scheer finished 2nd in Male Bowhunter Fingers with Darren Mulrooney
finishing 3rd in the same catagory. Loni Mancini and Darren Mulrooney were each named to the B.C. team to compete
in the National 3-D tournament held in Prince George.
The 2004 National 3-D Championships were held in Prince George July 30- Aug.2. Sagittarius Archers Will Dueck,
Sandy Dueck, Loni Mancini, Adrien Scheer and Darren Mulrooney were not about to let a National event pass by a
mere 9 hours away. The quintette represented their club very well. Loni Mancini finished third in Female
Bowhunter Open with Sandy Dueck taking 5th in the same class. Will had a slow start to the tournament and
finish middle of the pack in Male Bowhunter Open class. Adrien Scheer won the Male Bowhunter Fingers Class
with Darren Mulrooney taking second. Archers who attended the Nationals said the courses were tough with
some absolutely wonderful setups. One standing bear target was set in a mock camp with a sleeping tourist
at the picnick table and the shooting lane through an A-frame tarp. Another scene involved part of a 3-D
animal and a mock blood trail leading to a grizzly target with the remmainder of the 3-d animal at its feet.
The Silvertip Archers should be commended for their orginallity.

Report 1-208

Well here we are in November and Christmas is just around the corner. The annual food bank shoot will be Sunday,
December 12th. We hope the archery community will come out and support the Abbotsford food bank again this year.
Just a reminder that shooting will be $2.00 a round. The food bank can purchase a larger amount of food for the
same money than the general public. Cash also does not have best before date and takes up less shelf space.
The 11th annual B.C.'s Largest Indoor 3-D will be held January 8th and 9th, 2005. This event really kicks off
the start of the 3-D season. It is our biggest shoot of the year and draws archers from all parts of B.C.
and Washington state. The first arrow goes at 8:00 a.m. with awards each day at 4:00 p.m.

Report 1-211

December 2004
The Sagittarius Archers completed our annual food bank shoot on Dec 12. The archery community came through again this year to support those les fortunate. $388.45 was raised and some food donations were collected as well.
The Abbotsford food bank was appreciative as always.
The event on everyone's mind this time of year, aside from Christmas, is our 11th annual B.C.'s Largest Indoor 3-D.
The shoot goes January 8th and 9th 2005. Archers from North West Washington and the B.C. Interior area expected
which adds a different flavour to the competition. Archery retailers with the latest equipment for 2005 will be
on hand as usual. Draw prizes and awards will be handed out each day. This is the only Lower Mainland shoot which
gives the spectator a good prospective of the sport of 3-D archery. So come out and enjoy the opening shoot of
the 2005 season and maybe win one of our great draw prizes.

Report 1-222

Sagittarius Archer’s B.C.’s Largest Indoor 3-D

Jan. 8th and 9th 2005

It was Friday and the Fraser Valley was dealing up its occasional blizzard for the winter.  A Greyhound bus had crashed in whiteout conditions out on Sumas Prairie between Abbotsford and Chilliwack.  It sounded like an ideal time to stay off the roads and stay close to the fireplace.  The problems were the Sagittarius Archers were hosting their 11th Annual B.C.’s Largest Indoor 3-D Saturday and Sunday in the Agri-Fair Arena in Abbotsford. The targets and scenery for the shoot were at the club on (you guessed it) Sumas Prairie.

The plan was to meet at the club at 4:30pm load and start setup at 5:00pm and hopefully be done by 8:30pm.   Wendy Meyers had phoned most of our club members, many who of whom work construction; they were not working because of the weather.  They rounded up pickups and utility trailers and had the targets and scenery at the arena by 3:00pm.  Club members arrived as they got off work and we had 15 animal targets with scenery setup as well as 15 cub targets by 7:30pm.

Our biggest concern was how many people would come. This shoot has drawn archers from as Far as Creston and Quesnel.  We usually have people come over from Vancouver Island but their weather was worse than ours.  When the competition started at 8:00am Saturday, the hardcore archers were there. A large contingent of the Squamish Archers (about 35) arrived at about 9:30am and the day went quite well.  We did not get as many archers from Washington State as usual and I don’t think one archer made it off Vancouver Island but considering the weather it was a good shoot.

.  The small Rhinehart bears at about 20 yards were the subject of conversation, and I will say it was not positive.  Target #15, the Rhinehart moose, begged the question; How far is that?  Club members tunnelled the shot quite well with live trees and shrubs loaned to us by Cannor Nurseries.

Competition was tight as can be expected with only 15 targets.  Only 4 archers cleaned the course over the 2 days.  James Petter from Washington State and Brent Milne a local archer each shot 150 on Saturday in the Compound Fixed Pin with Release class.  Brent Milne won it in the shoot off.  Sagittarius archer, Will Dueck, shot a perfect 150 as did Bill Southall in the Male Open Class.  The man with the purple bow, Bill Southall, won the shoot off with Will taking second.   The Female Compound with Release saw Sandy Dueck take 2nd and Deb McCartney 3rd in a shoot off, after Loni Mancini shot a 148 for 1st. All three ladies are Sagittarius archers.

Will Dueck managed the only clean round on Sunday but there was a 4 way shoot off for 2nd and 3rd as Wayne Meyers, Fred Brody, Tim Huff, and Bill Southall all shot 148 in the Male Open Class.  Tim Huff took 2nd in the shoot off ahead of Sagittarius president, Wayne Meyers.  Compound Fixed Pin Release on Sunday proved to be the most interesting class of the shoot.  James Petter, Jason Robinson, Curtis Irving, Bill Whitehead, Ted Kennedy and Steve Bailey tied with scores of 148.  The 6 way shoot off found Curtis Irving (Sagittarius archer) and Ted Kennedy shooting again as their arrows was an equal distance from the center.  Ted beat Curtis the second time to take 2nd.  The arrow which remained in judge Dale Reilly’s back pocket from the initial shoot off belonged to Bill Whitehead who won the event. Compound Sighted Fingers class had a 3 way shoot off for 1st, which Adrein Scheer took ahead of Darren Mulrooney in 2nd and Jim Thorpe,3rd  who tied with 146 scores. (All Sagittarius archers

The Team trophy event features teams of 2 compound release shooters, 1 compound finger shooter, and either a barebow shooter or a cub(7-12 years old).  Each team archer’s first round score from Saturday and Sunday are added together to decide the winning team.  The best possible score is 1200.  The team of Sagittarius members Tim Bolan, Ian Biard, Doug Thorpe, and Jim Thorpe won this year with a score of 1105.  They finished just ahead of Adrein Scheer, Bill Southall, Chuck Land and John LaPlanche, who finished with a score of 1097.  Doug Thorpe carried the team with a 148 on the Saturday. It allowed his team to pick up the slack on Sunday where he shot a 142.  He was the youngest archer on the team at 10 and the most experienced. He has been shooting 3-D for 6 years.

The Speed Shoot is a real popular event at B.C.’s Largest Indoor 3-D.  Four balloons are set in a high density foam target.  The 3 fastest qualifiers then shoot off in a final. The prize is half the pot collected in the speed shoot entry fees.  Saturday had Brock Paton, Keith Reed and Chris Stahl in the final.  Keith Reed was the fastest qualifier and chose to shoot last.  Brock Paton was unable to break all the balloons with his 6 arrows. Chris Stahl shot next and needed only 4 arrows with a time of 21.24.  Keith Reed of Squamish broke all 4 but required 6 arrows to do it, with a time of 25.52.

Sunday had Keith Reed in the final again against Mark Wostock and Don ?(no last name listed)  Don suffered the same fate as Brock the previous day and failed to break all the balloons. Mark posted a time of 26.78 and put the pressure on Keith.  Keith came through with a close time of 27.63 but Mark walked away with the pot.

The 2005 Indoor did not draw as many archers as expected, primarily due to the very inclement weather.  It was still a success in our view.  This shoot and the success of it would not be possible without our sponsors.  These include Big Game Archery, Hub Sports, Chek-Mate Archery, Porcupine Creek Archery Supplies, McKenzie Targets, Boorman Archery, Monsens, and Agincourt Archery.  One of our biggest sponsors which certainly deserves a lot of credit for the success of this event over the years is Cannor Nurseries.  They enable us to turn a dirt floor arena into various landscapes for our targets and it that is just wonderful of them.
